I volunteer because . . .
"It helps add balance to my life. It provides me a place to add value. It introduces me to amazing women and reminds me that I have something significant in common with them. It reminds me that I can be amazing."
Lori Hobart, NN
Housing Oversight Team Leader
Want to share why you volunteer? Send a note to District Communications Liaison Lori Sherel.

Fact or fiction? Fact!
Did you know that a woman who did not join a sorority in college can still join after college as an alumna initiate?

Advisory board position descriptions now on OP
Wondering what the standards advisor is supposed to do, or how the scholarship advisor can help the collegiate chapter improve academically? Position descriptions for all advisors are now available on Officer Portal (in the Document Library under the Volunteer Resources folder). The position descriptions will help the advisory board members in their positions, and will also help the chapters with advisor recruitment. The chapters can use the descriptions as a hand-out when approaching potential advisors.
A full advisory board should consist of:
- Chapter advisor
- Alumnae relations advisor
- Finance advisor
- Membership advisor
- Philanthropy advisor
- Recruitment advisor
- Ritual advisor
- Scholarship advisor
- Social advisor
- Standards advisor
In addition, several of our collegiate chapters are looking for advisory board members. If you'd like to get involved, complete a Volunteer Interest Form. Questions? Contact Kelly McLaughlin, Volunteer Recruitment & Placement Team member.

District stars
Please welcome Janet Conroy as our new Advisory Board District Liaison! Janet was a Beta Rho collegian at Northern Illinois University and is currently an officer of the Boston Alumnae Chapter. (Janet replaces Lynne Cona, NN, who is Convention 2012 committee chairperson.) Congrats!
Congrats to Kelly Sprout on being appointed to the position of National Ritual Coaching Team Leader! She will be leaving our district team to help Alpha Sigma Alpha at a national level. Kelly has accomplished much over the last couple of years as District 2's Education Coaching Team Leader; before that she served the district as Chapter Education Coordinator. Kelly's an Epsilon Kappa and Central Pennsylvania Alumnae Chapter member.
Congrats also to Patti Latin, who will take over as the district Education Coaching Team Leader. Patti is from our Gamma Clio chapter (SUNY Cortland), where she was the colony coordinator and played a very active role in bringing Alpha Sigma Alpha back to that campus.

NPC resolution on fraternity recruitment
Did you know that the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) passed a resolution last year that sorority women must refrain from helping in men's fraternity recruitment? No acting as hostesses at fraternity rush parties or handing out name tags or beverages, and no wearing the letters of one fraternity. As an NPC sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha is expected to follow this resolution. Learn more about the resolution and the reasoning behind it. Advisors should review this information with their chapters before recruitment starts in the fall.

Emotionally intelligent arguing
When your opinions don't mesh well with those of the person sitting across from you, the mark you leave on the situation comes from how well you understand and manage your emotions (not from what you say to prove your point). When emotions are allowed to run haywire during a disagreement, things discombobulate very quickly and the discussion goes nowhere. Read this article on how to handle the situation with emotional intelligence.

Don't be at a disadvantage on Advantage!
Major changes to the AΣA Advantage program were announced at convention in July 2010. We are developing a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) that will help answer questions that members, advisors, and chapters may have about the changes and the new program. If you have questions or need more information, contact Education Coaching Team leader Patti Latin or the Education Coaching Team member for your chapter.
